The city of 3 rivers

Discovering the city of three rivers

Nicknamed the city of three rivers, Mont-de-Marsan was founded in the 12th century at the confluence of the Midou and the Douze, which meet in the heart of the city to form the Midouze. This exceptional geographical location shaped its history and fostered its development as a river port, where timber from the Landes region, wines from Tursan, and local produce were once transported to Bayonne.

Today, the landscaped banks of the Midou, Douze, and Midouze rivers offer an ideal setting for walking or cycling. From the historic center to Jean-Rameau Park, passing along the banks of the Midouze, visitors can enjoy a pleasant route that reveals all the charm of the capital of the Landes region.

Did you know that?

The two rivers, the Midou and the Douze, meet at the Place Pancaut to give birth to the Midouze, which then continues its course towards the Adour.

The historic center

Founded in the 12th century by Pierre de Marsan, a stroll through its narrow streets reveals vestiges of its medieval past: Romanesque houses built of shell limestone, ancient ramparts, and a river port. Among the must-see sites are the Lacataye Keep, Rue Maubec, Rue des Arceaux, and the banks of the Midouze River.

The Despiau-Wlérick Museum

Labelled as a "Musée de France", it is recognized as one of the most important French museums dedicated to figurative sculpture of the 19th and 20th centuries. (Note: The museum is currently undergoing renovation. The permanent collections are temporarily closed, but the sculpture garden remains accessible).
